New Fellows at the Zukunftskolleg
The Zukunftskolleg welcomes two more up-and-coming researchers as Fellows who had succeeded in the 5th application procedure for Fellowship grants and have started to work in Konstanz.
Philosopher Jeff Kochan will perform his project on “The Role of Emotion in Scientific Decision-Making” at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Konstanz. He was previously a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the Department of Philosophy at the University of St. Gallen and a Visiting Researcher at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Basel, both in Switzerland.
Alexander Titz is a chemist who worked previously as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Microbiology at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His project at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Konstanz focuses on „ Probing Carbohydrate Protein Interactions with Small Molecules”.
New Associated Fellows are Brian Leahy (Department of Linguistics), Rainer Nikolay (Department of Biology) and Annette Sommershof (Department of Biology) who were accepted within the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme.
Winners of the Doctoral Fellowships 2010
The Zukunftskolleg's doctoral fellowship programme is geared to students at the University of
Konstanz who are in the third year of their doctoral studies. Outstanding young researchers
from all university departments who are in the final phase of their doctoral thesis and are expected to contribute significantly to the scientific discourse are eligible for funding. The following applicants were granted the Doctoral Fellowship 2010:

- Khalid Kalim Wasim (Dept. of Biology)
- Nadja Müller (Dept. of Psychology)
- Samra Obeid (Dept. of Chemistry)
- Eric Raidl (Dept. of Philosophy)
- Michael Spagnol (Dept. of Linguistics)
Welcome to new Fellows
Between May and July 2010 the Zukunftskolleg could welcome three up-and-coming researchers as new Fellows. They all had succeeded in the latest procedure for Fellowship grants.
Eleanor Coghill is a linguist who worked previously within the AHRC-„North Eastern Neo-Aramaic Project“ at the University of Cambridge. Her project at the Department of Linguistics focuses on „The morpho-syntax of Neo-Aramaic dialects in an areal perspective“.
Psychologist Simon Hanslmayr will perform his project on „How neural synchronization forms long-term memories in humans“ at the Department of Psychology. He was previously a researcher at the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Regensburg.
Andreas Karrenbauer, previously a postdoctoral research assistant at the EPFL Lausanne, will work at his project on „Discrete Optimization for Flat Panel Displays“ at the Department of Computer and Information Science.
In addition Zukunftskolleg Mentorships have been granted to two new Associated Fellows:
Ralf Schmälzle from the Department of Psycholgy received a Mentorship for his project on „Health Risk Perception and Communication“.
Jale Tosun from the Department of Politics and Management has been granted a Mentorship for her project on „Bureaucratic and political representation of women and minorities in Eastern Europe“.
Welcome to New Fellows
Between December 2009 and the beginning of February 2010 the Zukunftskolleg could welcome four up-and-coming researchers as new Fellows. They all had succeded in the latest procedure for Fellowship grants. The Call for Applications had concentrated on the two key topics ‘Foundations of Social Justice’ and ‘Mixed Feelings’.
Martin Bruder is a psychologist who was previously a scientific project manager at the Head Office of the German Council of Science and Humanities in Cologne. His project at the Department of Psychology focuses on ‘Regulatory Functions of Social Emotions in Cooperation and Competition’.
Psychologist Anne Hauswald, previously a postdoctoral research assistant at the Department of Psychology at the University of Konstanz will perform her project on ‘Social emotions and the human mirror neuron system’ also at the Department of Psychology.
Psychologist Margarita Stolarova was previously a post-doc at the Department of Psychology at the University of Konstanz and a Subject Librarian for Psychology and Education at the University’s Library. She was also an Associated Fellow of the Zukunftskolleg since September 2008. Her two projects focuse on ‘Recent advances in the developmental cognitive neurosciences and what they really tell us about the care needs of children, especially of those up to three years of age’ and ‘Early child development in the context of non-parental care’ at the Department of Psychology.
Attila Tanyi is a philosopher and was previously a researcher at the Department of Philosophy of the Stockholm University in Sweden. His project focuses on ’Morality and Overdemandingness? The Case for Authority’ at the Department of Philosophy.

student is mentored by a fellow of the Zukunftskolleg so that they can benefit from engaging
in intellectual exchange with other members of the Zukunftskolleg.
